Why this site exists

Feral hogs are a serious and expensive problem. Texas A&M AgriLife put the Texas population at an estimated 2.6 million hogs in January 2026 (AgriLife Today, Jan. 2026). An August 2023 AgriLife report described more than 3 million feral hogs causing more than $500 million in damage to agriculture and private property in Texas each year (AgriLife Today, Aug. 2023). Nationally, USDA APHIS puts the minimum annual cost of feral swine damage at $3.4 billion (USDA APHIS). Different studies, different years: we cite each on its own rather than blending them.

If you're reading this, there's a good chance the numbers are personal: a pasture rooted up overnight, a deer feeder emptied by morning, a food plot flattened. The gear market is loud and full of “tested” claims nobody can check. Sounder & Scope exists to give the landowner and the lease hunter a straight, sourced answer to two questions: what actually works against hogs, and what should I buy to do it at my budget.

What we do, and what we don't

• We start with the problem. The whole-sounder plan (pattern, trap, shoot, exclude) comes first, and the gear follows from it.
• We rank on published evidence. Maker spec sheets and manuals, warranty terms and listing specs, scored on the rubric published on How We Choose. Seller performance numbers (detection range, lumens, yards of throw) are labeled “maker's claim.”
• We label every pick “Researched.” Iron Mako Media's standard is “Tested when I can. Researched when I can't. Labeled either way.” Nothing on this site has been field-tested by us, and no page claims otherwise.
• We sort by budget. Optics especially: a sub-$1,000 thermal and a $3,000 thermal are different tools, and each is compared only with others in its tier.
• We cite the rules. Texas hog rules are summarized from TPWD, Texas statute, the Texas Animal Health Commission and the Texas Department of Agriculture, with a link on every line. Start with Texas hog hunting laws.
• We don't print prices. Amazon sets prices and changes them often, so buttons say “Check price on Amazon” until a live, dated price feed is connected.
• We don't link firearms, ammunition, suppressors, hog toxicants or drones. Caliber pages are editorial only, and warfarin bait is a Texas state-limited-use pesticide we explain but never sell.

Sounder & Scope is written by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, a one-person portfolio of gear sites. Mike ranks gear on what can be checked and labels every pick with how it was evaluated. We don't list credentials we can't show you, and we don't invent experts or field testers.
