The method

How We Choose

Every pick on this site is chosen and scored from published, checkable evidence on the rubric below. Here's exactly what we look at, what the numbers mean, and what we don't claim.

Units we claim to have tested: 0

Most gear sites on these searches say they tested everything they rank. We haven't, and we'd rather tell you that up front than hide it in fine print. Sounder & Scope is a one-person publisher; we don't own a drawer full of thermal scopes, and we haven't sat over a feeder with each light on the list. Claiming otherwise would be the easiest lie in this business to tell and the hardest for you to catch.

So instead of test results, we give you a method you can check: every product's specs link to the page they came from, every score is built from the published rubric below, and every Texas rule links to TPWD, the statute or the agency that wrote it. If you disagree with a score, you can see exactly why we gave it.

Researched vs Hands-on

Iron Mako Media, the publisher behind this site, runs every one of its sites on one standard: “Tested when I can. Researched when I can't. Labeled either way.” Every pick on Sounder & Scope carries one of two labels:

  • Researched: chosen and scored from the maker's published specs, manuals, warranty terms and listing details, plus cited guidance from Texas A&M AgriLife and TPWD where it applies. At launch, every pick on this site is labeled Researched.
  • Hands-on: used only when there's documented, dated use of the product: how long, in what conditions, what broke, what surprised us, with original photos. No pick carries this label yet.

The evidence we use

  • Maker spec pages and manuals: sensor resolution, pixel pitch, NETD, lens, magnification, refresh rate, battery, IP rating, recoil rating, output in joules, capacity, height, materials.
  • Warranty terms as the maker publishes them.
  • Product listings for details the maker's site doesn't carry, labeled as listing details.
  • Texas A&M AgriLife and the Natural Resources Institute for trapping design, hog behavior and damage figures; TPWD, Texas statute, TAHC and TDA for the rules.
  • Math from published specs. Where it helps, we show the arithmetic (for example, how many sensor pixels a given lens puts on a hog at 100 yards) so you can check it yourself.

What we don't use as evidence: forum anecdotes, retailer blog posts, star ratings, or other sites' lists.

What “maker's claim” means

Some numbers are measurable facts about a product (a 384×288 sensor, a 35 mm lens, a 2.0-joule charger). Others are performance promises: “detects a man-sized target at 1,800 yards,” “700-yard throw,” “powers 25 miles of fence.” Those are measured under the maker's own conditions, often ideal ones, and rarely match what you'll see over a feeder on a humid night. Wherever a performance number appears on this site, it's tagged maker's claim, and we don't score heavily on it.

Budget tiers

We compare products only with others in the same budget tier, because a $700 thermal and a $3,000 thermal aren't competing for the same buyer. The tiers are:

  • Under $500
  • $500 to $1,000
  • $1,000 to $2,000
  • $2,000 and up

A product's tier comes from the Amazon price we saw when we researched it (September 2026). It's a category boundary, not a price quote: prices move, so always check the current price on Amazon.

The rubric, by category

Every score is x.x out of 10: the weighted average of four to six sub-scores, each judged from the evidence above. Scores appear on the page only. They are never published as review or rating markup, because they aren't test results.

Thermal scopes, clip-ons and monoculars

Rules the rubric enforces

  • No spec, no score. A pick needs a verifiable spec source. Where a maker doesn't publish a number, the page says “not published,” and that sub-score goes down, not up.
  • Value is judged within the tier. That's why a sub-$1,000 scope can outscore a $3,000 one on its own list.
  • Every pick names a reason to skip it. Each product card carries a “Skip this if” line. A recommendation with no stated drawback reads like an ad.
  • Commissions never move a score. We earn the same Amazon rate whichever product you pick, and scores are set before any link is added.
  • Winners can lose. When a model is discontinued, disappears from Amazon or is replaced, it comes off the list and the change is logged on the page.

Why no prices

Amazon sets prices and changes them constantly. Amazon's rules also require any price we show to come from its live data and stay current. Until a verified live feed is connected, every button says “Check price on Amazon” instead of a number that might be wrong. When the feed is connected, prices will appear inside the buttons with an “as of” date, and they'll disappear on their own if they go more than 48 hours stale.

What we never recommend

  • Firearms, ammunition and suppressors. Amazon doesn't sell them, and caliber pages like best caliber for hogs are editorial only.
  • Warfarin hog bait. It's a state-limited-use pesticide in Texas, available only to licensed applicators (Texas Department of Agriculture). We explain it; we never sell it.
  • Drones for locating hogs. TPWD makes it unlawful to use aircraft, including drones, to hunt or locate wildlife without an activity-specific permit.
