We haven't tested these units; scores come from published specs and the rubric on our How We Choose page. Every product figure below links to the maker's spec page, and how the technologies work is drawn from maker explainers we cite, including Pulsar's, a company that sells both kinds of optic.
Why this matters at all: hogs keep night hours. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's Feral Hogs in Texas (2004) says "feral hogs are usually nocturnal," and that intensive hunting may push them to become more nocturnal. If you plan to shoot hogs over your feeder or field, you'll be doing it in the dark, and the optic decides what you can see.
How each one sees a hog
Thermal doesn't use light at all. Teledyne FLIR's explainer puts it simply: thermal cameras "make pictures from heat, not visible light" ( FLIR, thermal vs night vision). Pulsar's guide adds that "thermal contrast makes a warm animal stand out against cooler terrain, even when visible detail is limited." A hog shows up as a bright (or dark, depending on the palette) shape whether there's a moon or not.
Digital night vision is a camera sensor that works in very low light. When there isn't enough light, which is most nights under cover, it needs an infrared (IR) illuminator: a flashlight whose beam is invisible, or nearly so, to people. FLIR describes night vision as taking in "small amounts of visible light" and magnifying them, and notes that even illuminated night vision cameras "still rely on reflected light to make an image." So the picture is only as far-reaching as the light. Pulsar's hunting article says IR illuminators "tend to fade away past 300 yards" ( Pulsar, thermal vs digital night vision riflescopes).
That one difference, emitted heat versus reflected light, decides almost everything in the table below.

Finding hogs in brush: thermal's biggest advantage
Hogs spend the day in cover. AgriLife's Feral Hogs in Texas says they "may rest during the day in dense, shady areas and move at night to more open areas for food and water." That means the first minutes of a hunt are often spent looking at the edge of the brush, trying to see which dark shape just moved.
This is where thermal earns its price. A warm body stands out against cooler leaves and ground even when only part of it shows through a gap. Pulsar also lists "rapid detection across large or broken terrain" as a thermal strength, which is the job of sweeping a tree line or a creek bottom. A night vision image is built from reflected light, so it has no heat contrast to separate a partly hidden hog from the cover around it. Pulsar's guide is blunt about it: digital night vision "still cannot detect a concealed target on heat alone."
Two honest limits on thermal. It doesn't see through solid cover: Pulsar lists "cannot see through ordinary glass, walls or water," and a hog fully behind a cedar is hidden from both technologies. And "rain, fog and humidity reduce contrast," so a muggy night narrows the gap between the hog and the brush.
Identifying the hog you're about to shoot
Detection tells you something warm is there. Identification tells you it's a hog and not a deer, a calf or a neighbor's dog, and ideally whether it's a sow with piglets or a lone boar. You need identification before every shot.
Night vision has the edge here within its range: the image looks like a black-and-white photo, with shape, texture and markings. Thermal shows a heat outline, and how much detail you get depends on how many sensor pixels land on the animal. On a budget 256x192 thermal with a short lens, that number falls quickly past feeder distance. Our 256 vs 384 vs 640 resolution guide works through the math from published sensor and lens specs.
Pulsar makes the key point about thermal ranges: a small group of pixels "can show that a warm object exists long before enough pixels describe its shape," and a detection claim "should never be interpreted as an ethical shooting distance." That's why the detection ranges on thermal boxes are labeled "maker's claim" everywhere on this site.
Daytime use: can one scope do both?
Many digital night vision scopes are sold as day/night scopes. ATN calls the X-Sight 5 a "Smart Ultra HD Day & Night Scope" (ATN); PARD lists a color mode alongside black-and-white on the NV008SP2 (PARD); and Sightmark ships the Wraith 4K 4-32x40 with a lens cap that has a built-in daytime filter (Sightmark). If you want one scope on one rifle for daylight and dark, that's a real point for night vision.
Thermal also works in daylight, because heat is there day and night. FLIR calls thermal "the best 24-hour imaging option." The catch is contrast: Pulsar warns that "hot backgrounds can approach target temperature," and both the ATN and Pulsar manuals we read warn against pointing the lens at the sun. ATN's ThOR 6 Mini manual says doing so "can permanently damage the sensor."
Price floor: night vision is the cheaper way in
By the Amazon prices we recorded for tiering, digital night vision riflescopes start lower. Four sit in our under-$500 tier (PARD NV008SP2-LRF, Sightmark Wraith 4K 4-32x40, Triton StarStrike Gen II and CyberDyne CyberSight HD). The cheapest thermal riflescopes we track sit in the $500 to $1,000 tier, and every one of them but one uses a 256x192 sensor. Thermal handhelds do reach under $500: the AGM Taipan V2 10-256, ATN BlazeSeeker 6 and TOPDON TS004 are all in that tier.
Why the gap? Pulsar's guide says ordinary glass blocks long-wave infrared, so thermal lenses are germanium, and "germanium cost and the difficulty of manufacturing fast, precise infrared optics contribute heavily to the price of a thermal device." Battery and power
Neither technology wins on batteries by default; the model decides it. On the thermal side, the ThOR 6 Mini runs about 8 hours from its two included 18650s (about 4 hours each) and takes USB-C external power, while the AGM Rattler V2 19-256 claims up to 11.5 hours per battery. On the night vision side, the PARD NV008SP2 claims up to 8 hours on an 18650, and the Sightmark Wraith 4K 4-32x40 lists 3.6 to 4.4 hours on four AA cells. Triton rates its StarStrike Gen II at about 4 hours but says it can run from a power bank (Triton).
Two practical notes. Night vision power includes the illuminator: on the PARD it's built in, while the ATN X-Sight 5 ships with a separate IR850 unit. And Pulsar lists "higher power consumption" among digital night vision's limits. Whichever you buy, check whether the battery is swappable before a long sit.
Recoil and toughness: read the rating, not the technology
The technology doesn't decide whether a scope survives your rifle; the build does. So look for a published recoil rating. Among our picks, ATN rates the ThOR 6 Mini at 6000 J (ATN) and PARD rates the NV008SP2 at 6,000 J. Some budget thermals publish no recoil figure at all (AGM doesn't list one for the Rattler V2 19-256), and we mark that as a con. Water rating works the same way: both scope picks list IP67.

ATN ThOR 6 Mini 256: the thermal starting point
It publishes the toughest spec sheet we found under $1,000: ≤20 mK NETD, IP67, a 6000 J recoil rating, a -22°F to 131°F operating range and a five-year warranty, and ATN's manual lists a heated zeroing target in the box. The trade-off is reach. The 15 mm lens gives an 11.7° view, great for a sounder milling around a feeder, but animals get small fast past about 150 yards. PARD NV008SP2-LRF: the night vision starting point
For an under-$500 scope, PARD publishes a lot: a 2688x1520 sensor, a built-in IR illuminator with a 350 m maker's claim, a choice of 850 or 940 nm, a 1,200-yard rangefinder claim, IP67 and 6,000 J. Its weak spot for hogs is the view: about 6.4° on the 50 mm version, narrow for close, moving animals. Our night vision scope rankings for hogs compare it with the rest of the field.
AGM Taipan V2 10-256: the hybrid path
If a thermal riflescope is out of reach, a thermal handheld plus a night vision scope covers both jobs: find the heat with the handheld, then identify and shoot through the scope. The Taipan V2 10-256 publishes a 256x192 sensor, a 10 mm lens for wide close scanning, swappable 18650s (two included), IP67 and a five-year transferable warranty (AGM). One note on the 850 vs 940 nm choice. Pulsar says an 850 nm illuminator "usually offers more reach but may show a faint red glow at the emitter," while 940 nm is less visible but gives up distance. Which to buy for your ground
- Feeder in a clearing, shots under 100 yards, tight budget: digital night vision with a good IR illuminator does this job, and it costs the least. Add a thermal handheld later for scanning the edges.
- Brushy pasture, creek bottoms, hogs slipping out of cover: thermal. Detection through gaps in cover is the whole point.
- Open fields and wheat or corn edges past 150 yards: thermal, with a longer lens or a 384 sensor. Night vision IR fades out at range, and a budget 256 thermal with a short lens runs out of detail. Start with our best thermal scopes for hog hunting.
- One rifle for daylight deer season and night hogs: a digital day/night scope is the simpler answer, or a thermal clip-on in front of your day scope (see our clip-on thermal picks).

A night optic is a removal tool, not a plan. Texas A&M AgriLife calls corral traps a "very successful trap style for catching feral hogs because their large size can facilitate capturing entire sounders at once" (Coping with Feral Hogs: Trapping), and a rifle at night works alongside that, not instead of it.
