Why trap the whole sounder

Feral hogs travel in family groups called sounders, and they replace their losses fast. Texas A&M's Natural Resources Institute reports that "a sow can average 1.5 litters a year and each litter typically produces five to six piglets", which works out to 7.5 to 9 piglets per sow per year. The same source estimates that about 66% of the wild pig population would have to be removed every year just to stop it growing (Texas A&M NRI, Nov. 2019). Taking one or two hogs at a time is a slow way to get there. That's why AgriLife says "most management efforts should include the use of large corral traps": a trap built to catch the whole group at once. Corral traps, box traps and the styles between

Texas A&M AgriLife is direct about which trap does the heavy lifting: "a large corral trap can capture an entire group" (AgriLife, Corral Traps for Feral Hogs), while a box trap typically holds one or two adult pigs (AgriLife, Box Traps for Feral Hogs). A good corral is a teardrop of 5 ft sheep and goat panels on T-posts every 4 ft, with no hard corners and the gate at the narrow end (AgriLife, Hog Trap Design). Box traps still earn a place for a lone boar near the house, because one person can move them. Net traps and drop traps reach corral-size catches without a ring of steel panels. Gates and doors

The gate decides how the trap closes. A guillotine (drop) gate falls once and seals the trap. A saloon door springs shut but lets late hogs push their way in. A rooter gate lets hogs lift their way in continuously, though AgriLife notes older, trap-shy hogs are often reluctant to use one. Remote and cellular triggers

A trip wire closes the trap on whichever hog pulls it first. A camera-based remote trigger lets you watch the trap and close it when the last hog is in. AgriLife lists it as an alternative to a physical trigger and notes that it "is typically more costly and does require cell service" (AgriLife, Trapping). Bait and pre-baiting

Trapping is a routine, not an event. AgriLife's guidance is to bait the site every day, put out only what the hogs will finish, pre-bait with the gate open, and set the trap only when the entire sounder is coming in. What Amazon sells, and what trap makers sell direct

An honest note before you shop. Amazon doesn't sell purpose-built hog box traps or corral panels, and when we searched in September 2026 it listed just one hog trap gate. What it does sell is a complete net trap, that steel drop gate, two cellular triggers, a trap camera that drops a gate from your phone, and plenty of bait. Several makers sell complete remote trap systems only through their own sites and dealers, including JAGER PRO, Pig Brig and Big Pig Traps (each sold direct by the maker; we don't earn on it). We don't rank them, but they're worth knowing about before you spend money on parts.

Texas rules after the catch

Plan what happens to the hogs before you set the trap. TPWD says "transportation and release of live feral hogs is unlawful, unless in compliance with Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) regulations" (TPWD Outdoor Annual). Under 4 TAC §55.9, live feral swine may go only directly to a recognized slaughter facility, an approved holding facility or an authorized hunting preserve, held for up to seven days in an escape-proof cage on the vehicle or trailer (4 Tex.
