SPYPOINT vs Tactacam: which cellular trail camera fits your feeder

We haven't tested these units; scores come from published specs and the rubric on our How We Choose page. Every figure below comes from the makers' product and plan pages or the Amazon listing, and the table links each one to its source. Plans are compared by what they include, not by price: prices change, and this site doesn't print them.

Five cameras side by side

All five sat in our under-$500 tier when we researched them, so the choice comes down to features and running cost. The scores use our cellular trail camera rubric: network flexibility 25%, night imaging 25%, power 20%, plan-cost transparency 15%, value 15%. The Flex-M twin pack scores lowest here on night imaging (modest resolution, unstated flash type) and power (unpublished), and the Pro 4.0 highest on night imaging and power.

Data plans compared

This is the real difference between the brands, and both publish their tiers (SPYPOINT plans; Tactacam plans).

SPYPOINT

SPYPOINT's camera pages list four tiers: Free (100 standard-definition photos a month), Basic (250 SD), Standard (1,000 HD) and Premium (unlimited HD), with "No activation fees" and "One plan per camera" (Flex-M page). Plans come monthly or annual, with annual billing priced lower.

Tactacam

Tactacam lists Starter (250 photos a month), Intermediate (500) and Pro (unlimited), with "No carrier contract required. No activation fee." You can "pause your plan to stop the billing cycle" in the off-season. Extra cameras join a plan for a per-camera add-on fee. HD photo and video requests are sold as add-ons on every tier; the XTRA account add-on bundles unlimited HD photo and video requests, enhanced mapping and TactaColor (Tactacam's full-color low-light feature). Live View streaming is a separate monthly add-on per camera.

Where each wins: SPYPOINT is the cheaper way to start (a free tier on every camera, and two cameras in the Flex-M twin pack) and its paid tiers include HD photos. Tactacam is simpler with several cameras on one account, lets you pause off-season, and has an unlimited tier, but HD images cost extra unless you add XTRA.

Night photos and flash

Hogs at a feeder mostly show up in the dark, so the flash matters. Three of the five can run no-glow:

• SPYPOINT Flex-Dark: SPYPOINT says you can "customize flash settings with low glow and no glow LEDs," with a 100 ft flash range claim (SPYPOINT).
• Tactacam Reveal Ultra and Pro 4.0: selectable no-glow or low-glow, rated at 80 ft on no-glow and 96 ft on low-glow (Tactacam).
• Tactacam Reveal X Gen 3.0: low-glow only, 96 ft (Tactacam).
• SPYPOINT Flex-M: neither SPYPOINT's page nor the listing we checked states the flash type; the listing gives a 90 ft detection and flash claim.

Tactacam's own explainer says no-glow is invisible to people and most animals but gives a smaller lit area and lower image quality than low-glow (Tactacam). Pick no-glow where theft is a risk, low-glow where you need reach. Our best trail camera for night ranking goes deeper on no-glow models from both brands and others.

Power and storage

Tactacam publishes more here. All three Tactacams take 12 AA batteries (not included) and have a DC 12V input for an external battery or solar panel; the Pro 4.0 also takes Tactacam's 5,000 or 10,000 mAh FlexPacks and is sold on Amazon as a solar listing (Tactacam). Each stores photos on internal memory (8GB, or 16GB on the Ultra) with an optional SD slot.

SPYPOINT's Flex-Dark page lists a microSD slot but doesn't publish battery type or runtime, and we found no power spec for the Flex-M in the sources we checked. A "Flex-Dark Solar" listing exists on Amazon if you want solar on the SPYPOINT side.

Networks, GPS and theft

Both brands auto-select a carrier. SPYPOINT says the Flex-Dark's "Dual-SIM technology automatically connects you to all major carriers"; the Flex-M listing describes auto multi-network LTE. Tactacam uses an integrated SIM with auto carrier selection across major LTE networks.

For a camera on a road-facing feeder, the Reveal Ultra has the standout feature: Tactacam says its Active GPS keeps sending coordinates "for weeks after the camera is turned off or loses power" and alerts you if the camera moves more than half a mile. Both SPYPOINT models list GPS, and SPYPOINT says the Flex-Dark shows its location on the in-app map.

Warranty

SPYPOINT lists a 2-year warranty on both the Flex-M and Flex-Dark. Tactacam's is 1 year, counted from activation. For a camera strapped to a tree through a Texas summer, the extra year is worth weighing.

Model matchups

Value: SPYPOINT Flex-M (twin pack) vs Tactacam Reveal X Gen 3.0

The Flex-M twin pack puts two cameras in the field, each with its own free tier, which is the cheapest way to watch two feeders. The tradeoffs are 28MP photos, 720p video and a 90 ft claim, and SPYPOINT's current FLEX lineup now features the newer Flex-M2 (SPYPOINT). The Reveal X Gen 3.0 is one camera with 4K photos, 8GB internal storage, a 12V input and a 96 ft low-glow flash, on a paid plan. Two feeders on a budget: Flex-M. One feeder where image quality matters: Reveal X.

No-glow: SPYPOINT Flex-Dark vs Tactacam Reveal Ultra

Both switch between no-glow and low-glow. The Flex-Dark claims a faster trigger (0.3 s on SPYPOINT's site, 0.4 s on the Amazon listing, against Tactacam's sub-half-second), a 100 ft flash claim, a free tier and a 2-year warranty. The Ultra brings 4K photos, 16GB internal storage, 12V power, live streaming (paid add-on) and the Active GPS theft alert. For a hidden feeder on a budget, the Flex-Dark; for a camera you worry about losing, the Ultra.

Where the Pro 4.0 Solar fits

SPYPOINT has no direct match among the models we compared. The Pro 4.0 adds dual image sensors for silent captures, simultaneous photo and video, a side LCD for aiming and the widest power options, with selectable no-glow. Tactacam doesn't publish its trigger speed, and Live View is a paid add-on.

Scenario: watching two feeders

A common setup on a hog lease is two feeders, or a feeder and a trap. Here is how each brand handles it, by photo allowance rather than price.

• SPYPOINT: two cameras mean two plans ("One plan per camera"), but each starts with its own free tier. The Flex-M twin pack gives you 2 x 100 = 200 free standard-definition photos a month across both feeders before you pay anything. Move whichever camera sees more hogs to a paid tier.
• Tactacam: one account plan, with the second camera added for a per-camera fee. On Starter that plan carries 250 photos a month; Pro is unlimited. If you'll run three or more cameras, or want to pause all of them when the season ends, this structure is simpler to manage.

Either way, check signal at both spots first. A camera that can't reach a tower is a card camera with a plan attached.

What the makers don't publish

Part of choosing between them is knowing where the published record runs out. On the pages we checked:

• SPYPOINT doesn't publish the Flex-Dark's battery type or runtime on its product page.
• Neither SPYPOINT's Flex-M page nor the Amazon listing states the Flex-M's flash type.
• SPYPOINT's plan pages don't say whether a plan can be paused off-season, or whether video transmits.
• Tactacam doesn't publish a trigger speed for the Reveal Pro 4.0.
• Tactacam lists no free tier, and prices HD photos and videos as add-on requests.

None of these gaps is a reason to rule a camera out. They're the questions to ask the maker, or to check in the manual, before you buy.

Which brand to choose

• Choose SPYPOINT for one or two cameras on a tight budget, a free tier to start, HD photos on the mid and top paid tiers, and a 2-year warranty.
• Choose Tactacam for several cameras on one account, off-season pausing, 4K photos, internal storage, 12V external power and, on the Ultra, a GPS alert if the camera walks off.
• Either way, choose a no-glow-capable model (Flex-Dark, Ultra or Pro 4.0) for a feeder near a road or a neighbor.
