Who fires the gate decides everything
This is the one thing to understand before you spend any money. A hog trap can be fired by the animal — a root stick, a trip wire, a motion sensor — or by you, watching and choosing the moment. Those two options produce completely different results, and the research is not subtle about it.
Texas A&M AgriLife's own publication on selecting a manual pig trap trigger exists precisely because a manually fired gate is how you catch a whole group. An animal-fired gate drops on the first hog bold enough to reach the trigger — usually a young one — and teaches every other pig in the sounder that the trap is a bad place. AgriLife's trapping guidance is built around pre-baiting until the whole group feeds inside and then taking them all at once.
So the ranking on this page is mostly a ranking of control. The triggers that put a human in the loop sit at the top; the one that puts the hog in the loop sits at the bottom, and we say why rather than hiding it. The same logic drives our trap gate rankings and how to trap feral hogs.
The four kinds of trigger
| Type | Who decides | What it needs | On this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live-video cellular release | You, watching video | Cell signal, data plan, solar | HogEye Mini |
| Call-to-drop cellular trigger | You, on a phone call | Cell signal, service, 12 V and solar | Hunt Supply cellular trigger |
| 4G relay switch (DIY) | You, by call or SMS | Your own SIM, your own release mechanism | KT-G3-A |
| Animal-activated | The hog | Nothing — no signal, no plan | Solar Hog Trap Trigger |
There is a fifth category we are not ranking: the purely mechanical root stick, trip wire and drop-stick arrangements you build yourself out of what is in the barn. Those are free, genuinely effective and covered on hog trap trigger ideas. This page is about the ones you buy.
How we picked
We scored every trigger and trap-release product in our registry against our published trap rubric: whole-sounder capability (30%), remote control and monitoring (25%), power and field reliability (15%), setup burden (15%) and support and warranty (15%). The full rubric is on how we choose. Specifications were re-read from the makers' own pages and current listings on October 11, 2026; nothing here was tested by us.
Whole-sounder capability carries the most weight for the reason above, and it is why the cheapest option on the page is also the lowest-ranked. That is an editorial judgement and it comes straight from the AgriLife literature, not from price.
The four side by side
The picks in context
1. Wildlife Dominion HogEye Mini (AT&T)
The one that does both jobs. Wildlife Dominion publishes this as a live-video cellular trap camera that drops the gate from the app, which means you are not guessing from a still photo taken four minutes ago — you watch the sounder come in and fire when the last one is through the door. The maker's shop page lists a latch, a latch adapter and a 30 ft gate cable included, a lithium battery with a lightweight solar charging system, AT&T on this listing (Verizon and Starlink versions are also sold), no-contract data you can start and stop at any time, and a three-year total replacement warranty with US-based support.
Honest gaps: the maker says it has night vision but does not publish an IR range or wavelength, and a data plan is required. It is also the most expensive route here. For what it does, we think that is the right money — one caught sounder is worth more than the hardware.
2. The Hunt Supply Cellular Hog Trap Trigger
The simplest version of the right idea. J4 Welding's Boar Door cell-activated trigger drops the gate on one phone call, and comes with a 12 V battery and a solar panel. The current listing includes 12 months of cell service, with renewal after the first year arranged through the manufacturer. It is built for guillotine-style drop gates that ride on a rail.
What it does not include is the gate and the camera. That second omission matters: without eyes on the trap you are firing on a photo from a separate trail camera, which is better than nothing and worse than live video. Our trap camera picks cover that half of the setup.
3. KT-G3-A 4G GSM Auto Relay Switch
The hacker's answer, and a genuinely good one if you can build the mechanical half. It is a two-channel 4G GSM relay with 30 A contacts, fired by a phone call — the call is rejected on caller ID so no minutes are used — or by SMS, with an SMS confirmation after each command. It runs on 12 to 24 V DC at about 60 mA standby, works on AT&T and T-Mobile 4G/3G in the US with your own prepaid SIM, and is rated from -25 to +55 °C. A power adapter, U-disk and external antenna are included.
You are supplying the release: a solenoid, a winch, an electromagnet, a cut-away pin. That is why it is third rather than first — the relay is reliable, your mechanism is the variable. If you are already building the trap (see how to build a hog trap), this is the cheapest way to get remote control of it.
4. Solar Hog Trap Trigger
Last, and not because it is badly made. The current listing describes a bolt-on trigger mechanism for an existing trap structure, with an integrated solar charger for continuous operation, that responds to animal movement at the trap, rated by the seller for continuous outdoor exposure. No cell signal, no SIM, no plan, no monthly cost — which on a property with no coverage is the only thing on this page that works at all.
The reason it ranks fourth is structural: the hog fires it. AgriLife's door-modification publication covers how door and trigger choice changes which hogs you catch, and an animal-activated trigger reliably catches the boldest animal rather than the group. Buy it if you have no signal, accept what it will and will not do, and lean harder on pre-baiting.
Non-target catches, which a remote trigger largely solves
That is also a legal and practical point. Feral hogs on private land in Texas have no closed season and no bag limit (TPWD Outdoor Annual), but everything else you might catch is governed by its own rules — and what you do with a trapped hog is governed too. See what to do with trapped hogs in Texas.

Best off-grid option, with a caveat
Solar Hog Trap Trigger
Animal-activated and solar-powered, so it needs no cell signal and no plan at all. But the animal fires it, not you - which is exactly what the research warns about.

How the 4.6 score breaks down
- Whole-sounder capability (30%)
- 3.5
- Remote control & monitoring (25%)
- 3
- Power & field reliability (15%)
- 8.5
- Setup burden (15%)
- 7
- Support & warranty (15%)

What the specs support
- Solar charging means no battery to carry out to the trap and no mains power to find
- Bolts onto a pen you have already built, so you are buying the one part you cannot improvise
- Cheaper than a cellular trigger, and there is no subscription behind it
Where it falls short
- Animal-activated rather than you-activated, so a single pig can spring it before the sounder is inside
- The seller publishes no dimensions, no gate weight limit and no warranty
- No camera and no phone alert: you find out what you caught when you drive out
- No published trigger range or sensor type
Skip this if…
…You are trying to take a whole sounder in one drop; an animal-triggered mechanism catches whoever touches it first, and a cellular trigger lets you wait for the group.

What to look for in a trap trigger
- Who fires it. If the answer is "the hog", you are buying a one-pig trap. Pay for a trigger you control if you have any signal at all.
- Whether you can see the trap when you fire. Live video beats a photo; a photo beats nothing. Firing blind on a schedule is guessing.
- Cell coverage at the trap, not at the gate. Walk out there with your phone before you buy anything cellular. Coverage at the house tells you nothing about a creek bottom.
- The plan, in writing. One pick includes twelve months then renews through the maker; one is no-contract; one needs your own prepaid SIM. These are very different running costs.
- Solar, always. A trap sits for weeks of pre-baiting. Every pick here either includes a solar panel or runs on 12 V where you can add one.
- What is actually in the box. The HogEye includes the latch, adapter and cable; the Hunt Supply trigger includes neither gate nor camera; the relay includes no release mechanism at all.
- Gate compatibility. Call-to-drop triggers are built for guillotine-style gates on a rail. A saloon-door gate is a different problem — see guillotine vs saloon door.
- Warranty and support. Three years total replacement with US support on our top pick; nothing published on the cheapest.
Mistakes people make
- Buying an animal-activated trigger to save money. It will catch the first young pig and educate the rest. That is the expensive outcome.
- Firing too early. The urge to drop the gate when six of nine hogs are in is the single commonest trapping mistake.
- Skipping pre-baiting. No trigger fixes a trap the sounder has not learned to feed inside. See best hog trap bait.
- Assuming cell coverage. Check at the trap site, on the carrier the device uses.
- Forgetting the running cost. A data plan for months of pre-baiting on multiple traps adds up.
- Pairing a cellular trigger with no camera. You have remote control and no information.
- Leaving a trap set and unwatched. Both a welfare problem and a non-target problem.
How we scored this
Every score, built from the published record
Every pick here is labeled Researched: we read each maker's published specs, manuals and warranty terms, compare products only against others in the same budget tier, and score them on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and seller performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you are buying.
Scores are our editorial read of that documented evidence. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
