Why the gate decides the catch

You can build a trap out of cattle panels and T-posts for very little. What you cannot improvise is the gate, and the gate is where traps succeed or fail. It sets three things:

• How wide the opening is, which decides whether wary adult sows will walk through it at all.
• Who triggers it — you, watching, or the first hog that bumps a wire.
• Whether hogs can still get in after it fires, which is the difference between a guillotine and a saloon door.

The four gate types, and what each one is for

Width and who pulls the trigger

This is the argument the whole category turns on, and one maker has published a position on it. JAGER PRO's trap and gate selection page states that narrow gates around 3 feet wide "require excessive conditioning times for adults to enter" and catch mainly juveniles and some adults, and that "wild pig behavior dictates users must employ larger trap sizes with wider gate thresholds." They cite one figure from their own 2013-14 Pennahatchee Creek project: adding a second gate improved capture efficiency by 94% while reducing labour to 13 minutes per pig.

JAGER PRO also explicitly discourages continuous-catch designs — root, swing and saloon gates — on the grounds that they catch mostly juveniles and create trap-resistant survivors. That is worth sitting with, because two of the cheapest products on this page are exactly that design. They are not useless; they are the right tool when you cannot monitor a trap and you accept a partial catch. But if your goal is the whole sounder, a wide drop gate you fire yourself is the design the published argument supports.

Which is why the third pick below is a trigger, not a gate. A drop gate with no way to fire it remotely is a gate you have to sit next to.

How we picked

We read every maker and dealer page for the hog trap gates in our registry again on September 26, 2026 and scored each on our published trap rubric: whole-sounder capability (30%), remote control and monitoring (25%), power and field reliability (15%), setup burden (15%) and support and warranty (15%).

We have not used these gates; every figure links to the page it came from, and the rubric is printed on our How We Choose page. Two notes on the ranking order:

• The JAGER PRO gate scores highest on the rubric and is ranked second, because this is a page about gates and it is sold as a complete trap system — gate, trigger, camera, control box and panels. On price it is not comparable with a bare gate. If you want the whole thing, buy it and stop reading.
• Three of these five are not sold on Amazon. Those carry a plain, non-earning link to the store that does sell them, and the button says so. We earn nothing on the JAGER PRO gate, the Hog Slammer or the Game Winner gate.

None of these makers publishes a warranty length, which costs every pick points on support. That is the state of the category, not a gap in our reading.

1. The Hunt Supply 6 ft Hog Trap Gate

The best bare gate you can buy, and the one that fits how most people actually build a trap: panels and posts you already own, plus one part that has to be right. It is a 6 ft wide welded-steel guillotine on a 7 ft rail, opening to roughly 4 ft high, built by J4 Welding, who sell the same gate as the Boar Door direct. Six feet is twice the width JAGER PRO criticises, so a group can walk in together, and about 4 ft of clearance means a big boar does not have to duck. It is all steel: no wood to splinter and no bent cattle-panel door.

The honest costs: 155 lb, so it is a two-person, truck-access install; it is a gate only, so the panels, T-posts, trigger and camera are all on you; and neither the Amazon listing nor J4's page publishes a warranty.

2. JAGER PRO M.I.N.E. Gate (Corporal package)

The best gate made, in a package that costs many times any other pick here. JAGER PRO publishes a 40 in x 96 in opening in 2 in x 4 in welded 6-gauge steel with no threshold to step over, a cellular trigger plus a push-button remote with 300-plus yard range, a camera system, a 12 V control box and 8 ft rigid panels in 4-gauge galvanized steel starting at an 18 ft diameter. Eight feet of threshold is the widest sold for hogs, and the argument for it is the one quoted above.

Why it is second on this page: it is a complete trap, not a gate, and JAGER PRO does not publish a warranty length on the package page. If you are outfitting a property and the budget is there, it is the strongest tool in this category by a wide margin.

3. The Hunt Supply Cellular Hog Trap Trigger

Not a gate, and included deliberately. A drop gate's whole advantage is that you decide when it falls, and that advantage only exists if you can fire it from somewhere other than arm's length. This is the cellular trigger built to hang the 6 ft gate on, from the same shop; J4 sells its equivalent as the Boar Door Cell-Activated Trigger. Pair it with pick one and you have the setup the published argument supports: a wide gate, held open, dropped on your say-so once the whole group is inside.

Budget for it from the start. A 6 ft gate plus a cellular trigger is the real cost of a whole-sounder trap built on your own panels.

4. Game Winner Hog Trap Saloon Gate

The cheapest purpose-built hog gate we found, and better than its price suggests for one reason: the 50 ft rope. Academy publishes spring-loaded saloon doors with multiple spring attachment points for tension adjustment, powder-coated steel tube construction, and a trigger stick plus 50 ft of nylon rope, designed to work with standard T-posts and fencing. That rope means you can trip it yourself once the group is inside instead of leaving it to the first hog — which converts a continuous-catch gate into something closer to a sounder gate.

The limits are real: Academy publishes no dimensions, no weight and no steel gauge, it is tube rather than welded plate, there is no warranty stated, and 50 feet means sitting that close in the dark without being winded.

5. Hog Slammer Saloon Gate

The classic continuous-catch gate, made by Southern Outdoor Technologies, the maker of the Sportsman's Condo. Published dimensions are 37.25 in wide by 48 in tall outside with a 33.375 in by 42 in opening, in 14-gauge steel with a leaf-green powder coat. A hog tips a bait bucket, a trigger rod releases, the doors slam — and they still push inward from outside, so hogs keep joining the ones already caught. It needs no power, no signal and no subscription, and a 20 to 30 ft diameter pen is the maker's recommendation.

It is last because of the number in its own spec sheet: a 33 inch opening. That is the narrow threshold the published argument warns about, and it is why this gate is the right answer only when you cannot monitor a trap at all and will accept catching the young ones.

Building your own gate

Plenty of Texas landowners weld their own, and the free literature is genuinely good. Two things to take from the shop-built route. First, make the opening wider than feels necessary — everything in the published argument points the same way. Second, build the gate to hang on a trigger rather than a stick: a DIY gate with a cellular trigger beats a bought gate you have to sit beside. What to look for in a hog trap gate

1. Opening width, first and above everything. Six feet (Hunt Supply) or eight (JAGER PRO) beats 33 inches (Hog Slammer). A gate a sow will not walk through is not a gate.
2. Who fires it. A gate you trigger catches groups. A gate a hog triggers catches whichever hog touched it first, usually a juvenile.
3. Height of the opening. About 4 ft of clearance under a raised drop gate means a big boar does not have to lower his head — the moment hogs balk.
4. Steel, and how much of it. Welded plate and 6-gauge (JAGER PRO) or welded steel frame and mesh (Hunt Supply) against 14-gauge (Hog Slammer) and powder-coated tube (Game Winner).
5. What is not included. Every gate here needs a pen. Most need a trigger. Budget panels, T-posts, a driver and a camera before you decide what you can afford.
6. Weight and access. 155 lb (Hunt Supply) needs a truck and a second person. The saloon gates do not.
7. Warranty, or the absence of one. None of these makers publishes a length. Factor that into the price.

Hanging the gate and conditioning hogs to it

• Condition before you arm. Feed the pen with the gate tied open for days or weeks until the whole group is coming in freely. The gate that catches a sounder is the one they have stopped noticing.
• Bait through the gate, not just inside it. A line of corn leading in and continuing past the threshold teaches hogs that the opening is not a decision point.

• Set the gate square and check the rail. A drop gate that binds on its rail is the commonest failure, and you will not find out until the night it matters.

• Have the plan for a full trap ready first. A pen of live hogs at dawn is not the moment to start reading the rules on moving them.

Trap gate mistakes

• Buying the narrowest gate because it is cheapest. It is the cheapest for a reason, and the published argument is that narrow gates catch juveniles.
• Buying a drop gate with no way to fire it remotely. The gate's advantage disappears the moment you have to sit beside it.
• Firing on the first hogs. The sow you did not catch will raise another litter. How fast feral hogs reproduce is the reason patience pays.
• Forgetting what the gate does not include. Panels, posts, driver, trigger, camera, bait. The gate is often less than half the cost of a working trap.
