The best red light for hog hunting, from dedicated red to long range

Why hunters run red

Red is the color hunters reach for when the shot is close and the worry is spooking the sounder. The theory is about the pig's eye: pigs have two types of color cones, peaking in the blue and green-yellow range (Neitz & Jacobs, 1989), and red sits farther from both peaks than green does. That study measured cone sensitivity in domestic pigs, not how a feral hog behaves under a beam, and we haven't found a field study that settles it. So this page doesn't promise that a red light won't be noticed. What it does is rank the red lights you can actually buy on what their makers publish about red.

The trade-off shows up on every spec sheet that breaks figures out by color: red posts smaller numbers than green. Sniper Hog Lights claims 400 lumens for its red module against 1,150 for green, and Odepro claims 375 yards in red against 452 in green on the KL52Plus. Part of that gap is built into the unit: lumens are weighted to the human eye, which NIST notes is, in daytime at least, "most sensitive to greenish-yellow light" (NIST, the candela). The throw claims point the same way, though no maker says how it measured them. How we picked

Every pick is a gun- or scope-mountable light that offers red, confirmed on Amazon in September 2026. We scored them on our hunting-light rubric: colors and intensity control (25%), throw claim and beam control (20%), mounting and zero retention (20%), power (15%), build and weather resistance (10%) and value (10%). Then, for the order within close scores, we looked hardest at what each maker publishes about its red specifically. All seven sit in the under-$500 budget tier.

A few red-capable lights didn't make this list on purpose. The Hyperion 50 sits between the 66 and the 40 in every way (750 yards of claimed red, about 17 ounces) and leads our best green light ranking; for red, the 66's extra 400 yards of claim and the 40's 5-ounce saving are both bigger differences than the 50 offers over either. The Wicked W403iC Deluxe swaps modules rather than rotating a head, and the A67iC covers the same three colors without the swap. The LUMENSHOOTER D8A's 700-yard claim isn't broken out by color, so we can't say what it claims for red. Motion-activated red feeder lights are a different job, covered in our hog feeder light picks. Red by the numbers

This table pulls out only what each maker publishes about red. Several don't break their figures out by color, and we've said so rather than guess.

Three things stand out. First, only Sniper Hog Lights publishes red output, red throw and a runtime together; everyone else gives you one or two of the three, or none. Second, the red numbers are modest next to the same makers' green claims: 1,150 vs 1,770 yards on the Hyperion 66 and 650 vs 1,130 on the Hyperion 40, both about 0.6 times the green figure. Third, red is the color that runs longest where a maker breaks runtime out: VASTFIRE claims 5 hours in red against 2.5 in green on its Predator Light. Those are claims, not measurements, but they come from the same maker about the same light, which makes the comparison fair.

1. Sniper Hog Lights Hyperion 66 Gun Hunters Kit (red module)

The best-documented red on the list, and the longest red claim any maker here publishes: 400 lumens and 1,150 yards (Sniper Hog Lights). It pairs that with a dial dimmer tail cap, a lockable focus from flood to spot, a 21700 battery with a published 2.5-hour runtime at full power on visible colors, a 5-year warranty on the housing and module, and the Predator Pro mount for 35 mm, 30 mm and 1 in. tubes or a Weaver/Picatinny rail, clearing objectives up to 60 mm. The honest cons: at about 20 ounces with a 2.75 in. head it's the heaviest light here, the kit ships with one module so make sure the one you order is red, and no IP rating is published. Amazon lists the Gun Hunters Package with the red module by name, which takes the guesswork out of ordering.

2. Sniper Hog Lights Hyperion 40 Gun Hunters Kit

The same 400-lumen red claim, dimmer, lockable focus and Predator Pro mount in a 1.75 in. head at about 15 ounces, with 650 yards of claimed red throw and a dual-bay fast charger in the box (Sniper Hog Lights). It scores a little below the 66, mostly because its reach claim is a bit over half the 66's; if weight on the scope matters more to you than the extra 500 yards of claim, it's the better buy, and for red at feeder distance the 650-yard figure is plenty. Same cons as the 66: one module per kit, no IP rating published.

3. Wicked Lights A67iC 3-Color-in-1

Red with green and white in the same head, switched by rotating a center-axis LED system that Wicked says keeps your zero (Wicked Lights). The rheostat tail cap brings red up from dim, and the gun light kit includes two 18650 batteries, a charger, a quick-detach mount and a scope-tube Picatinny mount for 1 in. and 30 mm tubes. It's the most flexible light on this page, and the reason it ranks third rather than first is data: Wicked doesn't publish lumens, runtime or a per-color throw figure, and the listing's 400-yard visibility claim covers the light as a whole. Pick it if you want red most nights and green or white some nights, without carrying a second light.

4. Odepro KL52Plus

The most weather-sealed option here, with a published IP68 rating, plus red, green, white and 850 nm IR modules, adjustable focus, a Picatinny mount and a quick-release scope mount. Its red claim is 375 yards on a spot beam, the second-longest published red figure on the list. The cons are real: the base kit's pressure switch is momentary-on only, so there's no dimming unless you buy Odepro's stepless-switch bundle; battery type and runtime aren't in the listing; and Odepro's own site didn't load when we checked, so every figure rests on the Amazon listing.

5. Wicked Lights A55iC Red

The only purpose-built red light from a maker that publishes its warranty. The A55iC is red and nothing else: a single red intensity-control LED behind a spot-to-flood zoom, a rheostat tail cap that turns on at any level, a quick-detach mount for 1 in. and 30 mm tubes, one 18650 battery, a charger and a case (Wicked Lights), covered by a limited lifetime warranty on the housing and 3 years on the LED (warranty terms). It ranks fifth because Wicked publishes no throw, lumen or runtime figure for it at all, and one battery in the kit is thin for a long sit. Buy it for dimmable red at feeder distance, and buy a spare cell.

6. VASTFIRE Predator Light (Red, Green, White)

The cheapest way to own red on a rifle with everything in the box: interchangeable red, green and white LED bulbs, a Picatinny mount and a quick-release scope mount, two rechargeable batteries, a USB charger and a dual-control pressure switch. It's also the only light here that publishes a red-specific runtime, 5 hours, against a 200-yard red throw claim, the shortest on the list. The beam is fixed with no zoom, no dimming is published, and IPX4 is splash resistance only. Plan on it for close work over a feeder in dry weather.

7. Odepro KL52 MAX Red

A budget dedicated red with the best dimming control on the list for the money: a stepless remote pressure switch that runs from 20% to 100%, plus a zoom head, a 160-lumen output claim and a 464-yard throw claim. It's last for one reason: the red-only listing we checked includes the light, the switch and a charger but no scope mount, so you're supplying the mount yourself. Battery type, runtime and an IP rating aren't published either. If you already own a mount, it's a lot of red for the money.

Dedicated red or multi-color?

Two lights here are red and nothing else (the A55iC Red and the KL52 MAX Red). The rest either rotate between colors in one head (the A67iC) or swap LED modules (the Hyperions, the KL52Plus and the VASTFIRE). A dedicated light is simpler, lighter and cheaper. A multi-color light hedges your bet on the color question, which is worth something when the science can't settle it, and gives you white for identifying what's in the beam before you shoot.

The catch with module lights is the zero. When the LED module comes out and a new one goes in, the beam may not sit exactly where it did. Wicked makes its center-axis design the selling point for exactly this reason, and says the zero holds when you switch. Whatever you buy, check the beam against your reticle before you hunt.

What to look for in a red hog light

1. A red-specific figure. A maker that publishes throw, output or runtime for red alone (Sniper Hog Lights, Odepro, VASTFIRE) tells you more than a single number for the whole light.
2. Dimming. Red's whole appeal is a slow, dim start, and a light that only snaps on at full power throws that away. The Hyperions, the Wicked lights and the KL52 MAX Red publish a dimmer; the KL52Plus base kit and the VASTFIRE don't.
3. Zoom or focus. Flood for a close feeder, spot for a far edge. The VASTFIRE's beam is fixed.
4. A mount for your scope or rail. Wicked: 1 in. and 30 mm tubes. Hyperion Predator Pro: 35 mm, 30 mm, 1 in. or a Weaver/Picatinny rail. KL52Plus and VASTFIRE: a Picatinny mount plus a scope mount. KL52 MAX Red: none in the red-only kit.
5. Runtime you can plan around. Sniper Hog Lights publishes 2.5 hours at full power on visible colors; VASTFIRE claims 5 hours in red. Carry a spare battery either way.
6. Weight. From well under a pound for the budget kits to about 20 ounces for the Hyperion 66. A red light is usually a close-range light, so ask whether you need the biggest head.

Setting up a red light on your scope

1. Check your scope's tube size before you order. Wicked's mounts fit 1 in. and 30 mm tubes. The Hyperion Predator Pro mount also takes 35 mm tubes or a Weaver/Picatinny rail. The KL52Plus and VASTFIRE ship with both a Picatinny mount and a scope mount; the KL52 MAX Red ships with neither.
2. Mount it as the maker shows, close to the scope, with the pressure switch or tail cap where your hand can reach it without shifting your hold.
3. Set the focus for the distance you shoot most. Red is usually a feeder-distance color, so most hunters will sit closer to flood than spot. The Hyperion's focus locks; the others' zoom heads don't publish a lock.
4. Line the beam up with your reticle at that distance. The Predator Pro mount adjusts for windage and elevation, which makes this easier.
5. Start dim. Set the rheostat or dial at its lowest setting before the hogs arrive and bring it up only as far as you need to identify the animal. Then recheck the beam after any module swap, and charge a spare battery before a long sit.

Which red light for which hunter

• You want the best-documented red: Hyperion 66, ordered with the red module.
• You want less weight on the rifle: Hyperion 40, about 15 ounces.
• You want green and white a twist away: Wicked A67iC.
• You hunt in the wet: Odepro KL52Plus, the only IP68 rating here.
• You want a red-only light with a lifetime housing warranty: Wicked A55iC Red.
• You want the longest claimed runtime in red on a small budget: VASTFIRE Predator Light.
• You already own a mount and want stepless dimming: Odepro KL52 MAX Red.

What your budget buys

All seven lights sit in the under-$500 tier, so a red light is never the expensive part of a night rig. Within the tier, the differences come down to three things you can see on the spec sheets:

• Entry level (VASTFIRE Predator Light, Odepro KL52 MAX Red): a per-color red claim and either a complete kit with a fixed beam (VASTFIRE) or stepless dimming with no mount (KL52 MAX Red).
• Value multi-color kit (Odepro KL52Plus): four colors including IR, zoom focus and IP68, but no dimming in the base kit.
• Wicked Lights (A55iC Red, A67iC): rheostat dimming and a published lifetime housing warranty, with no red-specific figures.
• Sniper Hog Lights (Hyperion 40, 66): the most published red data, the most adjustable mount and the longest red claims.

Red light vs an IR illuminator

A red light is for a regular scope: you see the hog in red light through ordinary glass. An infrared illuminator is for a night-vision device, and you won't see its beam without one. Several lights here (the Hyperions and the KL52Plus) offer an 850 nm IR module as well, which is useful if you plan to add night vision later. Mistakes to avoid

• Ordering a Hyperion kit in the wrong color. The kit ships with one module. Amazon lists the red package by name.
• Buying the KL52 MAX Red without a mount. The red-only listing doesn't include one.
• Comparing throw claims across brands. Nobody publishes a test method; compare within a brand.
• Skipping the zero check after a module swap. Confirm the beam against your reticle.
• Believing any light is invisible to hogs. No field study we found supports that for red.
• Buying red for reach. Every maker that publishes both colors claims more throw in green. If your shots are long, our green light ranking is the better list.
