What a feeder timer can and can't do about hogs

A feeder timer decides two things: when the spinner runs and for how long. It can't decide who eats. Once corn hits the ground, a hog can eat it as easily as a deer. So be clear about what you're buying: a timer gives you control over the schedule, and that control is useful in hog country in three ways.

• Timing. Texas A&M AgriLife notes that in warmer conditions feral hogs can "feed nocturnally" to keep cool (AgriLife, Feral Hog Ecology). A timer that feeds only in daylight leaves less corn waiting on the ground after dark in the warm months. It doesn't stop hogs that come in by day.
• Amount. Short runs put less corn on the ground at once. Whatever the deer don't clean up is there for the next visitor.
• Consistency. If you're using corn to pull a sounder into a trap, AgriLife says bait should be "available every single day to help make that location part of the hog's regular travel pattern" (AgriLife, Trapping). A timer keeps that promise when you can't be there.

What keeps hogs off the corn is a fence. AgriLife's guidance for a deer feeder is "a short fence 28 inches to 34 inches in height" around the area where feed is spread (AgriLife, Preventative Options). Motor kit or timer only?

The products on this page come in two kinds, and buying the wrong kind is the most common way to waste money on a feeder repair.

• Spinner motor kits (a complete power control unit: motor, spin plate, housing and timer): the Moultrie Pro Hunter III Feeder Kit, the Wildgame Evolution, the Wildgame Trophy Hunter and the All Seasons Feeders 12V Control Unit. Buy one of these when the motor is dead, the housing is cracked, or you're building a barrel feeder from scratch.
• Timer-only swaps: the Moultrie Universal Digital Timer III and THE Timer. Buy one of these when the motor still spins but the timer is failing, or when you want better scheduling on a feeder you already like.

For a timer, "hog resistance" mostly means how much scheduling control you get and how well the unit is protected; none of these can keep a hog off the ground below it. The same scheduling brain without the motor. It's the simplest way to turn an old feeder with a healthy motor into one you can schedule from your phone. It's a timer only: no motor, no spin plate, no housing. Moultrie's solar note names only its own 6V feeder panel.

3. Wildgame Innovations Evolution 6V Digital Power Control Unit

The kit to buy if raccoons or squirrels are your spinner's problem. Wildgame recesses the spinner plate under a heavy mounting bracket and uses a spring-loaded design that reseals to the barrel after each spin. The housing is powder-coated galvanized steel with a padlock hasp. Programming is the weak side: the 6V listing gives 4 feed times at 1 to 30 seconds, with no app. Wildgame's "varmint proof" language covers critters, not hogs, and its kit page mixes 6V and 12V details, so confirm which version you're ordering.

4. All Seasons Feeders 12V Control Unit

A heavy galvanized-steel box (12 x 8 x 10 in, 9 lb) with a 12V motor, a 1/4 in gate plate and THE TIMER inside, made to replace a worn unit or build a barrel feeder. All Seasons is the only maker here that publishes a dispense rate, 1.5 lb of corn per 4 seconds (maker's claim), which makes feed budgeting simple (see the math below). THE TIMER carries a 5-year warranty; the motor carries 1 year. It's 12V only, the battery isn't included, and there's no app.

5. THE Timer Wildlife Feeder Controller (6V/12V)

The plain replacement timer: 6 feed times, run time in seconds, a backlit LCD with lit buttons, a harness with a flat motor plug and spade battery connectors, plus a wiring kit for other motor styles. It works with 6V or 12V motors, and All Seasons Feeders lists a 5-year warranty on it. If you just need a dead timer working again and don't care about an app, this is the simple fix.

6. Wildgame Innovations Trophy Hunter 6V Digital Feeder Kit

A budget 6V spinner kit in a powder-coated galvanized steel case with a galvanized spinner plate and 6 feed times at 1 to 30 seconds. Wildgame claims a 360-degree, 30 ft throw (maker's claim). No guard, no app and no battery in the box. Add a varmint cage if raccoons climb your feeder, or pick the Evolution instead.

Bluetooth, cellular and what costs extra

Only the two Moultrie units offer app control. Bluetooth works from near the feeder and Moultrie says it needs no subscription. Cellular control is different: it runs through a paired Edge 3 Series camera, and Moultrie's plans page states that "all cellular connected devices require a paid subscription." The same page lists separate Feed Hub plans covering feed on demand, feed levels, feed schedules and status alerts for low feed and clogs or jams (Moultrie plans). Check which plan covers the feeder control you want before you count on changing feed times from the couch.

What to look for in a feeder timer

1. The right voltage. Match the timer or kit to your battery and motor: 6V, 12V, or a timer like the Moultrie UDT III or THE Timer that handles both.
2. Enough feed times, short enough runs. The range here is 4 to 10 a day. More slots let you split one long run into short ones. Durations run 1 to 60 seconds on the Moultrie units and 1 to 30 seconds on the Wildgame kits.
3. Sunrise and sunset sync. Feedings tied to sunrise and sunset shift with the season on their own. Only the Moultrie units publish it.
4. Protection from climbing varmints. A recessed spinner (Evolution) or a steel cage keeps raccoons and squirrels off the spinner. Neither does anything about hogs on the ground.
5. A housing you can lock and read in the dark. The Evolution has a padlock hasp; the Moultrie kit has a hinged door and backlit screen; THE Timer has a backlit LCD.
6. A warranty that matches the part. THE Timer and the All Seasons timer carry 5 years (the All Seasons motor 1 year); the Moultrie units carry 1 year.

Before you order: a fit check

A timer or kit that doesn't match your feeder means a second trip and a return. Five minutes at the feeder with a tape measure and a look at the wiring prevents it. Check these against the maker's page for the unit you're buying:

• Battery terminals. The Moultrie Universal Digital Timer III runs on 6V or 12V tab-top batteries with F-1 terminals. THE Timer uses spade battery connectors.
• Motor plug. THE Timer ships with a harness that has a flat motor plug, plus a wiring kit for other motor styles. If your motor has an unusual connector, that kit is the reason to choose it.
• Mount. The Pro Hunter III kit attaches with Moultrie's tool-free Quick-Lock, which is built around Moultrie feeders. The Wildgame kits use a 2 in drop funnel; the All Seasons unit has a 1/4 in gate plate and ships with mounting hardware.
• Space and weight. The All Seasons box measures 12 x 8 x 10 in and weighs 9 lb, per the maker. Make sure your feeder's bottom has room for it.
• What's still missing. No unit here includes a battery, and the Moultrie solar note names its own 6V panel only.

How long a hopper lasts: the math

Only All Seasons Feeders publishes a dispense rate for its 12V unit: 1.5 lb of corn per 4 seconds (maker's claim), or about 0.375 lb a second. Worked through:

• Two 4-second feedings a day: 3 lb a day. A 250 lb hopper lasts about 83 days.
• Two 8-second feedings a day: 6 lb a day. The same hopper lasts about 42 days.
• Four 6-second feedings a day: 9 lb a day. About 28 days.

Other motors, gate plates and corn will dispense at different rates, so treat this as a way to think about it, not a number for your feeder. Moultrie's units estimate feed level in the app instead. The point for hog country: doubling run time doubles the corn on the ground, and a feeder that hogs are raiding will empty far faster than this math says. A camera on the feeder tells you who is eating it.

Setting a schedule when hogs are around

What you set depends on what the feeder is for:

Budget reality

Every timer and kit on this page sat in our under-$500 tier on Amazon when we checked, and a timer-only swap means buying just the timer, not a motor and housing too. Budget for the parts that aren't in the box: none of these includes a battery, and solar panels are extra on the Moultrie units. Timer mistakes

• Buying a timer for a dead motor. A new timer won't fix a failing motor; buy a kit.
• Mismatched voltage. The Pro Hunter III kit and Trophy Hunter kit are 6V; the All Seasons unit is 12V.
• Forgetting the battery. Not one of these ships with one.
• Long runs at dusk. A big pile of corn at last light is a big pile of corn at midnight.
• Reading "varmint proof" as hog proof. It means raccoons and squirrels.
• Setting it and never checking. Without a camera, you don't know if deer or hogs are eating what the timer throws.
