Best hog proof deer feeders and the pen that makes them work

Why no feeder on Amazon is hog-proof

Start with the honest part. When we searched Amazon on 2026-09-19 for hog-proof feeders, feeder pens and feeder panels, we found no feeder that claims to keep hogs out and no purpose-built hog-proof pen for sale. The guards Amazon does sell are varmint cages, and their makers and listings aim them at raccoons, squirrels and birds. Texas Hunter game feeders weren't listed on Amazon at all; only the brand's fish feeders turned up.

The reason is how feeders work. A broadcast (spin) feeder throws corn onto open ground, and once it lands, it's food for whatever walks up. A gravity feeder keeps feed sitting in its ports day and night. Neither design can tell a deer from a hog. Texas A&M AgriLife's feeder-fence publication puts it bluntly: hunters and land managers put out thousands of tons of corn each year, and "though most of this corn is intended for deer, feral hogs consume a substantial portion of it." Its trail-camera photo caption reads: "When there are no fences, feral hogs routinely eat the corn that is meant to attract deer" ( AgriLife Extension L-5533).

So a page that ranks feeders as "hog-proof" would be selling you something that doesn't exist. What does exist is a hog-resistant setup: a feeder you can control, inside a fence you build. This page ranks the feeders that fit that setup best, then shows you how to build the part that does the real work.

What actually keeps hogs off the corn

1. A short panel pen (the proven fix)

Researchers with USDA and AgriLife Extension built welded-panel fences 20, 28 and 34 inches tall, each 28 feet in diameter around a broadcast corn feeder in the South Texas brush country. They watched the feeders with infrared cameras for two weeks before and two weeks after the fences went up, in summer and fall 2010. Their result: "the 20-inch fence reduced feral hog access while the 28- and 34-inch-tall fences kept them out completely." And the part deer hunters care about: "Adult deer visits to the feeders did not decline significantly after the fences were erected" (L-5533).

Texas A&M AgriLife's own management page repeats the recipe: "A short fence 28 inches to 34 inches in height can be constructed around the perimeter of the area where food is spread." Deer get in because "they can easily jump a fence of that height," and if fawns matter to you, "the 28 inch height should be used." The same page is candid that "there are few fences that can be considered truly 'hog proof' to a determined pig" (AgriLife, Preventative Options). The fawn caveat comes from a separate Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute study, which found fences taller than 33 inches limited fawn access. A December 2025 Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute article recommends 34-inch hog panels in a circle about 30 by 30 feet, with slits cut in the top to drop the height about 6 inches where fawns need in. It also adds a fair warning: adult feral pigs "have been recorded jumping much higher than this when motivated to escape from corral traps, so occasional breaches may occur" (Texas A&M NRI). 2. An electric fence (a strong second option)

AgriLife's guidance for electric fencing against hogs is at least two strands, with the lower strand low enough to hit juvenile and adult pigs on the nose, "approximately 8 inches and 18 inches respectively," and all vegetation cleared so the fence doesn't ground out. It also warns that an electric fence may not be a permanent solution: used too often in one area, or when food is scarce, hogs can become desensitized to the shock (AgriLife). 3. A schedule you control (helps, but doesn't exclude)

A timer decides when corn hits the ground. AgriLife notes that in warmer conditions feral hogs can "feed nocturnally" to stay cool (AgriLife, Feral Hog Ecology), so feeding only in daylight can cut how much corn is waiting for them after dark. How we picked

We compared every feeder and feeder guard we could confirm on Amazon on 2026-09-19 against the makers' own product pages and spec tables. Each is scored on our feeders rubric: hog resistance, feeder height and guarding (30%), programmability (20%), capacity and fill (20%), build and weather durability (20%) and value (10%). Because no feeder can exclude hogs by itself, "hog resistance" here means how well a feeder supports a pen: steel and latches where animals can reach, throw you can turn down, and feed times you can set. The feeders side by side

Two things stand out. Only the Pro Hunter III publishes a way to shorten its throw, and only the Boss Buck sled publishes a varmint grate and a latched steel lid. The rest use plastic or HDPE hoppers, with one-year warranties on the Moultrie models, which is fine up on legs inside a fence and a weaker point anywhere else.

The picks in context

1. Boss Buck 300 lb Stand & Fill Sled Feeder

The strongest build of the group, and the reason it ranks first. Boss Buck lists a powder-coated steel body, a steel lid with two lockable latches, varmint guard grating and an enclosed compartment for the timer and battery. The timer offers two quick-set programs plus 16 adjustable slots, and a solar panel comes in the box. The sled base has tow-hook holes and anchor holes, so you can drag it into position with an ATV and pin it before you close a pen around it. The limits are just as clear: it sits at ground level, the throw area is open to anything that walks up, Boss Buck doesn't publish a throw distance or a warranty term, and the 12V battery is extra.

2. Moultrie 250 lb Pro Hunter III Tripod Feeder

If you're building a pen around a tripod feeder, this may be the better buy than #1. It's the only feeder here with published throw control (high, medium or low RPM off a metal spin plate), which is what keeps corn landing inside a 28-foot circle instead of outside it. It also runs up to 10 feed times a day with sunrise and sunset sync, set on the unit or over Bluetooth with no subscription, and it pairs with an Edge 3 Series camera for cellular feeder control. The hopper is plastic, the warranty is one year, and the 6V tab-top battery is sold separately.

3. Moultrie 200 lb Tripod Deer Feeder (Bluetooth)

The budget way into a pen setup. It runs on AA batteries, holds 200 lb, fills at 5.5 feet and takes up to 4 feed times a day at 1 to 20 seconds each, with Bluetooth control in the Moultrie app. No throw control is listed, so check where the corn lands before you size the pen. Short, low-count feedings are an advantage here: less corn per run means less on the ground if something gets in.

4. Boss Buck 350 lb Gravity Protein Feeder

The pick if you feed protein. Three angled feed tubes with drain holes, a thick-wall UV-protected HDPE hopper, about 350 lb of corn or 300 lb of large pellets, and a conversion path to a 12V spinner later. As a gravity feeder it's open around the clock, so in hog country it belongs inside a pen. Plan that pen bigger than a corn pen: the Caesar Kleberg researchers suggested protein-feeder exclosures of 80 by 80 feet or larger so deer don't crowd while feeding (as summarized in L-5533).

5. Moultrie Gravity Deer Feeder (tripod)

No electronics, no batteries, a twist-lock lid, and a Quick-Lock head that swaps to a Moultrie spinner kit without tools. It's the cheapest feeder here to run, and the easiest for hogs to empty: feed sits at the ports 24 hours a day. Buy it only with a pen, or with a plan to convert it to a spinner you can schedule. Moultrie's own tripod gravity model is 250 lb, but the Amazon title doesn't state capacity, so confirm it on the listing.

6. Highwild Varmint Cage Feeder Guard

We include it because "varmint guard" is what Amazon shows when you search for hog protection, and you should know what it is. It's a powder-coated steel cage with smaller mesh and an octagonal top that fits 30 and 55 gallon barrel feeders. Highwild sells it against raccoons and squirrels. It guards the spinner, not the corn on the ground, and it makes no hog claim.

7. Wildgame Innovations Varmint Cage

A solid steel frame around a feeder's power control unit, with mounting hardware, sold against raccoons, squirrels and other varmints. Wildgame doesn't list which units or barrels it fits. Like the Highwild cage, it protects the motor from critters that climb; it does nothing about hogs eating what the motor throws.

Or feed them on purpose

Some landowners flip the problem: if hogs are coming to corn anyway, use the corn to remove them. That's a legitimate plan, and it's the one Texas A&M AgriLife describes for trapping. Its trapping page lists deer corn and soured corn among common baits and says managers should "ensure that bait is available every single day to help make that location part of the hog's regular travel pattern" (AgriLife, Trapping). A feeder on a timer is the easiest way to keep that promise every day.

• Into a shooting lane: keep the feeder in the open where you have a safe backstop, light it with a motion-activated light (see our feeder light rankings), and watch it on a cellular camera so you sit only on the nights they show up.

What to look for in a feeder for hog country

1. Plan the pen first, then pick the feeder. The 28 to 34 inch pen is what the research supports. The feeder's job is to fit inside it, throw inside it and hold enough feed that you aren't refilling it every few days.
2. Throw you can turn down. A broadcast feeder that throws past the fence is feeding hogs outside it. The Pro Hunter III is the only pick here with published throw settings.
3. Feed times you control. More feed times and sunrise/sunset sync let you keep feedings short and in daylight. The Pro Hunter III does 10 a day with sunrise and sunset sync; the 200 lb Moultrie does 4; the Boss Buck sled has 16 slots.
4. Steel where animals can reach it. A ground-level feeder is in reach of every animal on the property. If the hopper sits low, the Boss Buck sled's steel body and latched steel lid are the kind of build you want. Plastic hoppers make more sense up on legs, inside a fence.
5. Capacity that matches your trips. 200 to 350 lb is the range here. Bigger hoppers mean fewer refills; check fill height too (5.5 to 6 feet on the Moultrie tripods).
6. A cage only if raccoons are the problem. Varmint cages protect spinners from climbing critters. They don't protect corn from hogs.

Build the pen: materials and steps

Hog panels and utility panels are a farm-store purchase; we found none on Amazon. For a 28-inch pen, AgriLife's L-5533 lists:

• Three 60-inch by 16-foot utility panels
• Twelve 5-foot T-posts
• Wire clips, a T-post driver, fencing pliers and bolt cutters

1. Cut each panel lengthwise exactly in half with the bolt cutters (six 16-foot panels, 30 inches tall).
2. Stand the panels end to end in a circle about 28 feet across, overlapping the ends by one 4-inch square and pushing the cut edge into the ground.
3. Clip the ends together and center the feeder in the circle.
4. Drive T-posts on the outside of the circle, one in the middle of each panel and one at each overlap, and clip the panels to them.
5. Make sure the panels sit flush to the ground, with no gaps hogs could dig under.

For a 34-inch pen, L-5533 used graduated hog panel with the smaller openings closest to the ground. If fawns are around, cut at least two slots about 6 inches deep by 3 feet wide into the top of a 34-inch fence. The math on the 28-inch pen checks out: a 28-foot circle has a circumference of about 88 feet (28 x 3.14), and six 16-foot panels give you 96 feet, which leaves room for the overlaps (L-5533).

Keep the throw inside the pen

A 28-foot pen has a 14-foot radius. Any corn thrown farther than 14 feet from the spinner lands outside the fence, where hogs can eat it. Most makers don't publish throw distance per setting. Moultrie publishes settings (high, medium, low RPM) but not distances. Wildgame claims a 30-foot, 360-degree feed range for its Trophy Hunter spinner kit (maker's claim); if that 30 feet is a radius, most of the corn would land outside a 28-foot pen.

The practical fix: set the lowest throw, run a feeding before you build the fence, and look at where the corn landed. Size the pen to the throw, or turn the throw down to the pen. Our spin feeder vs gravity feeder comparison covers how each design behaves inside a fence.

What a hog-resistant setup costs

Every feeder and guard on this page sat in our under-$500 tier on Amazon when we checked, and most sit well inside it. The budget question isn't really which feeder; it's whether you add the pen. Plan on three parts:

• The feeder: a Moultrie tripod at the low end, the steel Boss Buck sled at the top.
• The power: AA batteries on the 200 lb Moultrie; a 6V tab-top battery on the Pro Hunter III; a 12V battery on the Boss Buck sled (solar panel included). None of those batteries is in the box.
• The pen: panels, T-posts and clips from a farm store. It's the part that does the excluding. The L-5533 authors call these fences labor intensive, but say they "will pay for themselves in feed savings."

If the budget only stretches to one thing this season, the pen around the feeder you already own does more against hogs than a new feeder with no pen.

Mistakes that feed hogs anyway

• Gaps under the panels. AgriLife is explicit: panels flush to the ground, no gaps hogs might dig under.
• A fence too short or too tall. 20 inches only reduced hog visits in the study; above 33 inches, fawns had trouble getting in.
• Throwing corn over the fence. Check the landing zone after the first feeding.
• A protein pen that's too small. The 80 by 80 foot suggestion for protein feeders exists to stop deer from crowding.
• Trusting a varmint cage. It's built for raccoons.
