The best electric fence for hogs starts with the charger

What an electric fence can and can't do for hogs

An electric fence protects a place. It doesn't remove a single hog. That makes it the last step in the whole-sounder plan, after you've trapped and shot what you can: it keeps the next group out of the food plot, the garden, the feeder or the hay meadow you can't afford to lose.

Texas A&M AgriLife's preventative options page calls electric fencing "a useful tool for excluding feral hogs from an area," with two cautions. First, the charge has to be strong enough that AgriLife calls it inadvisable in an area frequented by people. Second, it may not be a permanent solution: if a fence is used too often in an area, or food is scarce, hogs can become desensitized to the shock. Zareba's own feral hog guidance says the same thing from the maker's side, warning that an animal's drive to reach food can be stronger than its fear of the fence. So fence the few places that matter, keep the removal going, and don't expect wire to hold back a hungry sounder on its own.

Why we rank on joules, not miles

Charger boxes lead with miles. Those figures are the maker's claim, and the headline number is for a clean, weed-free fence. Of the makers here, Zareba shows most clearly how fast it falls. For its 25 Mile AC charger (EAC25M-Z), the maker's own table reads:

Polywire in heavy weeds gets 3 of the 25 miles on the box, or 12% of the headline (3 ÷ 25 = 0.12). A hog fence runs low to the ground, right where the grass grows, so the headline number tells you little.

Output energy, in joules, is the better comparison, and it's the heaviest weight in our fence rubric (35%). Where a maker publishes both an output and a stored figure, compare output to output: Patriot lists 2.0 J output and 3.0 J stored for the PMX200, and Gallagher lists 0.21 J output and 0.3 J stored for the S30. On output, the six chargers here span more than a thirteen-fold range, from 2.0 J (PMX200) down to 0.15 J (SolarGuard 150); 2.0 ÷ 0.15 = 13.3.

How we picked

We started from the chargers Amazon sold on 2026-09-19 from Patriot, Zareba and Gallagher, then scored each on the fence rubric published on How We Choose: output in joules for hog pressure (35%), power-source fit for where hog fences actually go (25%), grounding and installation guidance (15%), durability and warranty (15%) and value within the tier (10%). We haven't tested these units; scores come from published specs and the rubric on our How We Choose page.

Power-source fit carries a quarter of the score for a reason. Hogs hit plots, pastures and feeders, and those are often far from an outlet. A plug-in charger can have the most joules on the list and still be the wrong buy if the fence is half a mile from the barn.

The picks in context

1. Patriot P10 Dual Purpose: best hog fence charger

The P10 wins because it pairs real output with the flexibility most hog fences need. It puts out 1.0 J, the same as the Zareba 25 Mile, and runs on either a 12 V battery or a 110 V plug, with the adapter and battery leads both in the box. Patriot says it's solar compatible, so a panel can keep the battery topped up at a remote plot. That's about 4.8 times the output of the Gallagher S30 (1.0 ÷ 0.21) with the same freedom from an outlet. The catch: the battery and panel aren't included, so budget for them and for trips to swap a battery if you don't add solar. The warranty is 3 years, including lightning.

2. Patriot PMX200: most output, if you have power

At 2.0 output joules, the PMX200 has twice the P10's output and the most margin on this list against weeds loading the line. It's low impedance, carries Patriot's 3-year lightning-inclusive warranty, and plugs into 110 V, which is the whole limitation. If your hogs are working the garden behind the house or a pasture next to the barn, it's the strongest choice. Anywhere else, it ranks below the P10 for one reason: it needs an outlet.

3. Zareba 25 Mile AC (EAC25M-Z): the best-documented plug-in

Also 1.0 J, and the charger with the most detailed distance table here (shown above). Zareba names pigs among the animals it controls, it's built in the USA and UL listed, and it has a "Fence OK" light and a fuseless design. It's a plug-in, like the PMX200, with half the output and a shorter 2-year warranty, which is why it sits third.

4. Gallagher S30 Lithium Solar: the all-in-one

The S30 is the simplest remote setup: a 3.8 W panel and an internal lithium iron phosphate battery in one 3.54 lb unit that mounts on a steel T-post, with fence and earth leads included. Gallagher lists it as suitable for wildlife exclusion and slows the pulse at night to hold voltage, and it publishes a typical distance (4 miles) next to its clean-wire figure (20 miles). The weakness is output. At 0.21 J it's a charger for a short, clean two-strand ring around a plot or garden, not a long line through brush.

5. Patriot PMX50: a short garden fence near the house

A quarter of the PMX200's output (0.5 J) with the same 3-year lightning-inclusive warranty and low-impedance design. Patriot describes it as a fit for smaller fence lines. It's the sensible plug-in for a backyard garden or a small plot by the house; for anything longer or weedier, the PMX200 or P10 is worth the step up.

6. Patriot SolarGuard 150: portable, and small

Panel, 6 V battery and fence leads all come in one weatherproof unit, with a 3-year lightning-inclusive warranty. It's the easiest charger here to carry out and set up. At 0.15 J it's also the lowest output we ranked, and its 12-mile rating comes with no weed-load breakdown. Use it for a small garden or a feeder ring, not a sounder working a long fence.

Strands and heights for hogs

For hogs, the bottom wire is the one that matters. Texas A&M AgriLife's guidance: "At least two strand should be used and the lower strand should be placed low enough to hit juvenile and adult pigs on the nose (approximately 8 inches and 18 inches respectively)." It adds that "all vegetation cleared away so that the fence is not accidentally grounded." The Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management also describes two-strand fences with wires at 8 and 18 inches (ICWDM).

Zareba's feral hog page describes a heavier, permanent build: high-tensile fencing, which it calls "by far the most effective means to exclude feral hogs," with a "5 to 6 strand wire fence with wires spaced 8 to 10 inches," a minimum height of 3 feet, a low-impedance charger with a 25-plus-mile rating, and at least 5,000 volts on the fence.

The two fit different jobs:

• Two-strand polywire (AgriLife's minimum). Temporary or seasonal: a food plot, a garden, a hay meadow during the months hogs hit it. Step-in posts, two strands at about 8 and 18 inches, a charger from the list above.
• Five- or six-strand high-tensile (Zareba). Permanent: a perimeter you intend to keep for years. More wire, more posts, and the most charger you can power.

Grounding: the part people skip

The ground system is half of the circuit, and Zareba's tips note that adding rods increases how much charge the system collects for a stronger shock. Its ground rod installation guide and its grounding tips lay out the basics:

• "An effective grounding system consists of three 6 to 8 foot grounding rods," spaced 10 feet apart.
• The first rod goes within 20 feet of the charger.
• Keep rods at least 50 feet from a utility ground rod, a buried telephone line or a buried metal water line.
• Sandy, dry and rocky soils may need more rods or a two-wire (ground-return) system, and so may long fences.
• Use copper or galvanized rods, don't mix metals, and connect them with insulated lead-out wire rated at 20,000 volts.
• Check the fence voltage periodically, especially as the soil changes between dry and wet seasons.

Zareba's point about dry soil matters in a Texas summer. If the tester reads low and the line is clean, add rods before you blame the charger.

Wire: match it to the length of the run

A strong charger on the wrong wire loses its output down the line. Gallagher publishes resistance and voltage at distance for its polywires, which makes the difference easy to see:

The standard polywire has about 46 times the resistance of Turbo Wire (6,000 ÷ 130 = 46). A worked example: a one-acre square food plot is about 209 feet on a side (the square root of 43,560 square feet), so its perimeter is about 835 feet. That's past the 656 feet Gallagher recommends for its standard polywire, so a plot that size calls for Turbo Wire. Two strands take about 1,670 feet of wire, which one 2,625 ft roll of Turbo Wire covers.

What your budget buys

All six chargers here fall in our under-$500 tier as seen on Amazon on 2026-09-19, so the box is rarely the expensive part. The whole fence is. Budget for:

• Wire for every strand, sized to the run (see above).
• Posts and insulators: step-in posts for a seasonal two-strand fence, T-posts and insulators for anything permanent.
• Three or more ground rods, clamps and 20,000-volt lead-out wire.
• For the P10 on battery: a 12 V battery and, ideally, a solar panel to keep it charged.
• A fence tester, so you know the fence is hot before a hog tells you it isn't.

Within the tier, the money buys output and power flexibility. The two all-in-one solar units (the SolarGuard 150 and the S30) are also the two lowest-output chargers we ranked. The P10 needs a separate battery, but it carries several times their output.

Chargers we left off

• Patriot PE5. 0.2 J, and Patriot says to keep it under shelter and out of the elements. Fine for a backyard garden next to a porch; too light for hogs on a real fence line.
• Zareba 5 Mile Solar (ESP5M-Z). 0.10 J, the lowest output we found, and the maker lists no rating for heavy weeds. It's positioned for small animals and pets.
• Zareba 10 Mile AC (EAC10M-Z). Zareba names pigs among its targets, but its own page gives two output figures (0.5 J in the description, 0.05 J in the spec table), and the warranty is 1 year. The Patriot PMX50 is the cleaner buy at the same output.

Hog fence mistakes

1. Buying on miles. Compare output joules. The miles on the box assume a clean fence you won't have.
2. Strands too high. AgriLife sets the lower strand low enough to hit juvenile pigs on the nose, at about 8 inches. Set it higher and the young ones can pass under.
3. Weeds on the bottom wire. AgriLife's own instruction is to clear vegetation so the fence doesn't ground out. Mow or spray the strip.
4. One short ground rod. Three rods, 6 to 8 feet, 10 feet apart, per Zareba, and more in dry soil.
5. Standard polywire on a long run. Past about 650 feet, Gallagher points you to its low-resistance wire.
6. Fencing where people walk. AgriLife warns a hog-strength charge is inadvisable where people are often around. Mark the fence and keep it away from play areas.
7. Expecting the fence to do the removal. Hogs can become desensitized, per AgriLife. Keep trapping; see what hog damage costs for why.

For feeders specifically, remember that a physical ring can work without any charge: a December 2025 Texas A&M NRI article found 28- to 34-inch fences kept hogs off feed completely, and recommended 34-inch hog panels.
