
The honest answer to "how much does a thermal scope cost" is a range, and the useful answer is what you get at each point in it. We don't print prices for specific models here, because they change week to week and we have no live price feed. What we can show is the budget tier each scope fell into on Amazon when we researched it, and exactly what the scopes in that tier publish. That tells you what the money buys.

Tiers reflect the Amazon price we saw when we researched each model, used only to group them. Specs and warranty terms come from each maker's page, linked on the product cards and in our best thermal scopes for hog hunting, where the strongest of them are ranked. The pattern is clear: as the price goes up, the sensor grows and the lens gets longer, then the extras arrive.
Why thermal costs what it does
A thermal scope can't use a glass lens. Pulsar's comparison guide explains that ordinary glass blocks long-wave infrared, so thermal devices use germanium objective lenses, and "germanium cost and the difficulty of manufacturing fast, precise infrared optics contribute heavily to the price of a thermal device" ( Pulsar). The same guide lists "germanium optics and high-resolution sensors remain costly" among thermal's limitations. That's why a bigger lens and a bigger sensor are exactly the two things that move a scope up a tier.
Features add the rest. A laser rangefinder, a ballistic calculator, a higher-resolution display and a bigger battery all push the price up without changing how many pixels land on the hog.
What the money buys at hog distances
Here's the part that matters for a hog problem. How much detail a scope shows on a hog comes from pixel pitch and lens focal length, and our 256 vs 384 vs 640 guide works the math from published specs. Applied to the tiers:
- Under $1,000 mostly buys a 256 behind a 15 to 25 mm lens. By the geometry, that setup drops to a rough identification threshold on a big hog somewhere between about 100 and 165 yards, depending on the lens. That's feeder and trap distance. The one 384 in the tier, the GOYOJO GRL335, reaches further.
- $1,000 to $2,000 buys a 384 behind a 35 to 50 mm lens, good to roughly 230 yards on the same yardstick. That covers most small fields and pasture edges, and it's the tier where a rangefinder becomes an option.
- $2,000 and up buys a 640, which at the same 35 mm lens shows the same detail as a 384 across a much wider view, or a switchable-lens 384. You pay for seeing a whole field at once, or for reach.
So the tiers aren't "good, better, best" so much as "feeder, field, big country." A landowner whose hogs hit one feeder at 60 yards doesn't need to spend like one watching a 40-acre field.

Costs that aren't on the box
- Mounts and rings. Some scopes include a mount and some don't. ATN includes a Picatinny mount with the ThOR 6 Mini, and AGM includes its ADM mount with the Rattler V2. ATN notes that rings are not included with the ThOR 6 LRF 384 (ATN). Check the box contents before you compare prices.
- Spare batteries. Many scopes run on 18650 cells, and some publish only 4 to 5 hours per cell (the RIX Storm S6R about 4 hours, the oneleaf Mars up to 5). For an all-night sit, budget for spares or a USB-C power bank. Pulsar covers its rechargeable battery packs for one year, separately from the device (Pulsar warranty).
- A steady rest. Zeroing a thermal takes a rifle that doesn't move, and so does a clean shot at night. Our best shooting sticks and tripods covers the options.
- A thermal target. Paper targets don't show up in thermal. ATN lists a heated zeroing target in the box with the ThOR 6 and ThOR 6 Mini; for other scopes, our thermal zeroing guide covers cheap do-it-yourself targets from the makers' own advice.
Are thermal scopes worth it?
It depends on what the hogs are costing you and whether you'll use the scope as part of a plan. Here is what the sources say, so you can weigh it for your own place.
- Hogs are a night problem. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's Feral Hogs in Texas (2004) says "feral hogs are usually nocturnal," and that intensive hunting may make them more so (AgriLife Extension). If you're going to shoot hogs, you'll be doing it in the dark.
- The damage is real money. AgriLife's Coping with Feral Hogs impacts page cites a 2021 Texas study finding that impacts to individual producers can run upwards of two hundred thousand dollars a year (Texas A&M AgriLife). Statewide, AgriLife Today put damage to agriculture and private property at more than $500 million a year (August 2023, AgriLife Today).
- Shooting alone rarely stops growth. Texas A&M's Natural Resources Institute says "we'd need to eliminate 66% of our wild pig population annually" to stop it growing (November 2019, Texas A&M NRI). AgriLife calls corral traps very successful because they can capture entire sounders at once (AgriLife trapping).
Put together: a thermal scope is worth it when you'll hunt hogs at night regularly and use it alongside trapping, to take the ones that dodge the trap or to thin a sounder that's pressuring a field. It's hard to justify as the only tool against a big population. How long will a thermal scope last?
None of the makers in our registry publishes an expected service life in years, so we won't invent one. The closest published proxy is the warranty: how long the maker is willing to cover defects. Here are the terms we read:

A warranty isn't a lifespan, but it tells you what the maker will stand behind, and it varies from one year to five even within one brand. What you can control is how you treat the scope:
- Keep the lens off the sun. ATN's ThOR 6 Mini manual warns that aiming the lens at the sun or intense light sources "can permanently damage the sensor" ( ATN manual). Pulsar's manual gives the same warning and adds that the warranty doesn't cover damage from ignoring the operating instructions (Pulsar manual).
- Match the recoil rating to your rifle. Many scopes publish one (6000 J is common); several budget scopes don't, and we count that against them.
- Mind the water rating and operating temperature. Both are on most spec sheets and in the tables on our ranking pages.
- Record your zero before firmware updates. oneleaf warns that firmware updates "will erase all the saved zero profiles and the ballistic profiles" on its Mars scope and asks owners to note their X/Y coordinates first (oneleaf).
- Register it the day it arrives. ATN requires registration to validate its warranty, and Pulsar's extra two years depend on it.

If the scope tiers are more than the problem justifies right now, there are three cheaper routes.
