The best hog feeders for baiting hogs

The opposite of hog-proofing

Most feeder advice on this site is about keeping hogs out — there is a whole page on hog-proof deer feeders and the panel pen that makes them work. This page is the reverse, and it is a different problem with a different answer.

If you are trying to remove hogs, you want them arriving at a place you choose, at a time you choose, in a group. That is what a feeder does. Texas A&M AgriLife's material on trapping and selective shooting both rest on the same foundation: hogs conditioned to a bait site are hogs you can act on.

So the criteria invert. On the hog-proof page, a feeder that scatters corn on the ground is a failure. Here it is the point. A feeder low enough for hogs to reach, throwing feed where you can see it, on a timer that matches when hogs move — that is the whole specification.

What matters in a feeder you are using as bait

1. Feed times, and how many. Hogs are largely nocturnal where they are pressured. A feeder with 10 programmable times (Moultrie Pro Hunter III) lets you put corn down at 9 p.m., midnight and 3 a.m. — and then stop feeding at dawn so deer and raccoons take less of it. Four times a day (Moultrie 200 lb) is workable; two is not.
2. Feed duration. 1 to 60 seconds (Pro Hunter III) against 1 to 20 seconds (200 lb standard). Longer throws put down enough corn to hold a group rather than one hog.
3. Throw control. High, medium or low RPM changes the spread. Low RPM concentrates the corn near the feeder, which is what you want inside a trap pen or in front of a blind at a known distance.
4. Capacity versus refill trips. Every visit to a bait site costs you scent and pressure. 300 to 350 lb (Boss Buck) means fewer trips than 200 (Moultrie standard).
5. Power that survives being left alone. Solar (Boss Buck sled, Moultrie Pro Hunter III compatible) beats AA batteries for a site you visit every few weeks.

Spin feeder or gravity feeder for hogs

For most people the answer is a spin feeder, because the timer is the thing that turns feeding into patterning. A gravity feeder earns its place when you want a site permanently baited and you do not need it at a particular hour — keeping a trap pen attractive between visits, for instance. We re-read each maker's published spec page on September 26, 2026 and scored on our published feeder rubric: hog resistance (30%), programmability (20%), capacity and fill (20%), build and weather durability (20%) and value (10%).

One thing to be straight about: the "hog resistance" weighting works against everything on this page. The rubric was written for keeping hogs out of a deer feeder, and we do not rewrite scoring per page — so a feeder that is excellent at baiting hogs scores middling on a rubric that rewards excluding them. 1. Moultrie 250 lb Pro Hunter III

The best bait feeder here, and it comes down to two published specs nothing else matches together: up to 10 feed times a day at 1 to 60 seconds each, and high, medium or low throw RPM. Those two settings are the difference between scattering corn and putting corn in a specific place at a specific hour. Add a metal spin plate with 360° coverage, sunrise and sunset scheduling, Bluetooth app control, a 6 ft fill height on a 250 lb hopper, solar compatibility and a published operating range of 14°F to 140°F.

The costs: the 6V tab-top battery is sold separately, the hopper is plastic, and the warranty is one year.

2. Boss Buck 300 lb Stand & Fill Sled Feeder

The ground-level answer, and the toughest build in this group. Boss Buck publishes a 300 lb powder-coated steel hopper on a sled bottom with tow-hook and anchor holes, a diverter plate, varmint guard grating, a 12V heavy-duty motor, a solar panel included, and 2 Quick Set programs plus 16 adjustable timer slots with programmable durations.

Sitting on the ground is what disqualifies it from the hog-proof page and what recommends it here: hogs reach it easily, and a sled you can tow means you can move the bait site to where the damage is. The included solar panel matters for a feeder you leave for weeks. Boss Buck publishes no warranty length, and the battery is not included.

3. Moultrie 200 lb Tripod Feeder

The budget spin feeder, and enough for one bait site. A 200 lb plastic hopper on powder-coated steel legs at a 5.5 ft fill height, 360° broadcast, up to 4 feed times a day at 1 to 20 seconds each, and Bluetooth app control that pairs with the Edge 3 camera. It runs on 4 AA batteries, or 8 for extended operation, neither included.

The limits versus the Pro Hunter III are exactly the two specs that matter most for baiting: 4 feed times instead of 10, 20 seconds instead of 60, and no throw-RPM control. For a single site you visit often, it is fine. For patterning a sounder across a property, the Pro Hunter III is the better buy.

4. Boss Buck 350 lb Gravity Protein Feeder

The one for holding hogs rather than timing them. Boss Buck publishes about 350 lb of corn (or 300 lb of large protein pellets) in a thick-wall UV-protected HDPE hopper with galvanized hardware, three feed tubes, 78 in legs and 34 x 32 x 35 in dimensions — and notes it converts to an automatic 12V spinner timer if you later want scheduling.

Gravity means no timer, no battery and nothing to fail, which is why it suits a site you want permanently baited: a trap pen you are conditioning, or a corner of the property you are trying to pull hogs toward. A sounder will empty it faster than deer will, so plan the refill trips. No published warranty length.

5. Moultrie Gravity Tripod Feeder

The cheapest way to keep feed available on the ground. A tripod gravity feeder with no electronics and no batteries, a 6 ft fill height, a twist-lock detachable lid, powder-coated steel legs in six sections, and Quick-Lock compatibility so you can convert it to a spin feeder later — which, given the Pro Hunter III kit is our sixth pick, is a sensible upgrade path. Published operating range 14°F to 140°F and a one-year warranty.

Same trade as any gravity feeder: nothing to break, nothing to control.

6. Moultrie Pro Hunter III Feeder Kit

Not a feeder — the timer and spinner assembly on its own. If you already have a hopper on legs, this bolts the winning feature set onto it: up to 10 feed times a day at 1 to 60 seconds, high/medium/low throw RPM, a metal spin plate with 360° coverage, sunrise and sunset scheduling, Bluetooth control, a hinged housing with a backlit screen, and Quick-Lock attachment to Moultrie feeders with no tools.

Baiting to a trap, not just to a blind

Shooting over a feeder removes a few hogs. Baiting a trap removes groups, and the feeder is how you get a sounder comfortable enough to walk into a pen. AgriLife's trapping material and its notes on feral hog ecology both point the same direction: conditioning takes time and consistency, and a bait site that runs dry undoes it.

Two practical consequences. First, a gravity feeder or a large-capacity spin feeder is often better next to a trap than a small one, because the trap has to stay attractive between your visits. What to look for in a hog bait feeder

1. Feed times, as many as you can get. 10 per day (Pro Hunter III, and its kit) or 16 timer slots (Boss Buck sled) lets you feed when hogs actually move. 4 per day is the floor.
2. Feed duration up to about a minute. 1 to 60 seconds puts down enough to hold a group. 1 to 20 seconds feeds one hog and a raccoon.
3. Throw-RPM control. Low RPM keeps corn tight to the feeder, which is what you want inside a pen or at a known shooting distance.
4. Capacity matched to your visit interval. 300 to 350 lb for a site you check monthly; 200 lb if you are there weekly anyway.
5. Solar, if the site is remote. Included on the Boss Buck sled; compatible on the Moultrie Pro Hunter III units. AA batteries on a far feeder are a chore.
6. Steel where hogs can reach it. Boss Buck's powder-coated steel hopper survives being shouldered; a plastic hopper at ground level will not, long-term.
7. An upgrade path. Moultrie's Quick-Lock means a gravity feeder can become a spin feeder later.

Setting up to pattern a sounder

• Feed at the same times every night, then leave it alone. Consistency is what conditions a group. Changing the schedule every week resets it.
• Feed at night and stop at dawn. Where hogs are pressured they move after dark. Daylight feeding mostly subsidises deer, raccoons and birds.
• Put a camera on it before you put a rifle on it. You want to know how many, what size and what hour before you sit. Our cellular trail camera picks send you that without a site visit.
• Range the feeder in daylight. Pace or range the distance from the blind before dark so you are not guessing at 2 a.m.
• Add a light or use thermal, not both badly. A motion-activated feeder light or a colored gun light works at feeder distance; see feeder lights and red lights. Thermal finds them before they arrive: thermal monoculars under $500.

• Minimise your trips. Every refill leaves scent and pressure. Bigger hopper, fewer visits, better results.

Baiting mistakes

• Feeding all day. Corn thrown at noon feeds everything except the animals you are after.
• Buying a feeder with 4 feed times when you needed 10. It is the single spec that most limits a bait setup, and it cannot be fixed without a new timer.
• Letting the site run dry. Conditioning a sounder takes weeks and an empty hopper undoes it in days.
• Baiting a blind when you should be baiting a trap. Shooting takes a few hogs; a trap takes the group. How fast feral hogs reproduce explains why that distinction decides the outcome.
